Delaford Development Day
Despite its best efforts, Storm Brian couldn’t dampen spirits as our U6 to U14 teams took part in the first Development Day training session of the 2017/18 season. Over 80 players from our youth teams took part in an exciting group training session targeting our Foundation and Youth Development Phases.
The session kicked off with Rob Mehta and Mark Hill conducting a Ball Mastery warm up where our players showed their confidence and technical ability on the ball. The players then rotated through five stations, each with a different theme, allowing our coaches to focus on a variety of coaching points specific to their team’s development. Stations included a focus on 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 scenarios, giving players the opportunity to show off their creativity using their ball mastery flicks n’ tricks. The ‘Promotion Ladder’ and ‘Link Game’ proved to be hugely popular stations across all age groups. Whilst a good technical foundation is important for all players, the importance of team combination play was brought out on the Rondo station, where players demonstrated their ability to move the ball quickly, under pressure and in tight spaces, progressing onto exploiting overloads and counter-attacking. No Development Day would be complete without a Finishing station, where players took part in various fast paced shooting exercises working on technique, power and accuracy.
A very demanding but rewarding training session for players and coaches alike with some amazing talent on display. Hats off to our brand new U6 Mini Colts who endured the horrible weather and kept those little legs moving for over an hour and a half! It was encouraging to see such determination, hard work and willingness to learn across all our age groups – and most importantly it was great to see so many smiling faces with a ball at their feet as can be seen from the photos below! Development Day 2 will follow in the New Year…
